Are you bored with water, want some flavor and increase your nutrient intake? How about trying some infused water? I am a big fan of anything that will motivate us to drink more water and replace those sugary drinks.

Many health benefit claims are made about infused water, but many of them are from an increase in water consumption. Benefits of increasing your hydration include the following;

  • Appetite control
  • Gastrointestinal and digestive health
  • Weight loss
  • Skin health
  • Energy

One claim is that infused water helps to eliminate toxins from the body. However, no scientific evidence exists to support this.


There aren’t a ton of nutrients infused into the water. However, something is better than nothing. One way to increase the nutrients is to squeeze the fruit in the water such as lemons. I don’t recommend infusing water as a replacement for eating fruit and vegetables.


You can chop up any combination of fruit, vegetables, and herbs and add it to hot or cold water. In my home, we have a water pitcher with a section to pour the ingredients into. That way they are infusing the water but not floating around when we drink it. Another style I recommend strains the water as you pour it out.  Another great option is a personal water bottle meant for infusing. Here are the pitcher and portable water bottle I recommend.

Once you have the ingredients in the water pitcher, you can leave it in the refrigerator for up to 12-hours and then you need to remove them before they begin to decompose.


There are a ton of infused water recipes on the internet. Here are some simple recipes to get you started. Experiment with the ratios to a flavor you like. Have fun with this.

  • Blackberry and Orange
  • Lemon and Cayenne Pepper
  • Watermelon and Mint
  • Grapefruit and Rosemary
  • Orange and Lemon
  • Lemon and Lime
  • Strawberry and Basil
  • Apple and Cinnamon
